1. Am I required to be a US Citizen?
Yes, all Police Officers in Pennsylvania must be US citizens.
2. Do I need to be 21 years of age to apply?
Must be at least 21 years of age by the time you are hired. —Non-Civil Service Departments
Must be at least 21 years of age the date application is submitted. —Civil Service Departments
NOTE – Approximately half of our Departments are Civil Service.
There is NO maximum age.
3. Do I need to have PA Act 120 Training to be considered for employment?
No. While some of our member Departments only consider Act 120 certified candidates, several departments do not require certification.
4. If I don’t have PA Act 120 Training what will happen if I am hired?
Any Department who hires an applicant that does not have Act 120 certification will send that applicant to Act 120 training which is held at Harrisburg Area Community College.
5. If I am not hired in this hiring round how can I get PA Act 120 Training on my own?
Harrisburg Area Community College and most other Regional Police Academies in PA accept pre-service candidates for training. Contact HACC or one of the other academies if you are interested.
6. Am I required to have a college degree to apply?
No. Applicants must have a high school diploma or a GED.
7. Do veterans receive a hiring preference?
Veterans receive standard Veteran’s Preference points or Veteran’s Preference (Must submit DD214 at the written test).
8. Am I required to have a Pennsylvania Drivers License to apply?
No. You must obtain a Pennsylvania Drivers License prior to appointment.
9. Do I need to be a Pennsylvania or York County resident to apply?
No. Some Departments have residency requirements but these do not apply until after you are appointed.
10. If I am certified as an officer in another State or as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, can my certification be transferred to Pennsylvania?
Questions about training and certification need to be answered by MPOETC which is the PA certification body for municipal police officers. Please review the requirements at the MPOETC website. Please contact MPOETC directly with any certification questions.
11. What are the hearing and vision standards required for certification in Pennsylvania?

12. If I have been convicted of a criminal offense can I be considered for employment?
Certain convictions can disqualify a candidate from being certified as a police officer in Pennsylvania. The law states that a conviction of an offense that could result in a sentence of one year in jail or more is a disqualifying offense. Specific questions about disqualifying offenses and certification need to be answered by MPOETC which is the PA certification body for municipal police officers. Please contact MPOETC with these questions.
13. Where will the written and oral testing be held?
Both the written and oral examinations will be held at York County School of Technology 2179 South Queen Street York, PA 17402.
14. When will the physical fitness test be held?
The MYPTC does not conduct the physical fitness testing. The physical fitness guidelines for admission to the Act 120 Training program can be found at the MPOETC website.
15. What does the MYPTC testing process consist of?
The MYPTC represents 8 Police Departments to consolidate the recruiting, application, and testing process. MYPTC conducts and scores the written examination. Those candidates who successfully complete the written exam will be asked to select a date and time to appear for an oral examination. Upon successful completion the applicant will be given instructions on registering for the physical fitness test. Once the written and oral and physical fitness scores are compiled, MYPTC provides a certified list to each Department who will conduct the remaining parts of the hiring process using their own Departmental procedures.
16. What does the Departmental part of the hiring process consist of?
Once a Department contacts you they will you direct you through the remaining process. This can consist of additional interviews, physical and psychological testing, drug testing, background check, polygraph or voice stress analysis, etc.
17. If I am unable to attend the written or oral testing dates, will alternate dates be offered.
No. You must attend one of the dates offered for both the written and oral examinations.
18. Is there a study guide that I can use to prepare for the written test?
All candidates who apply will receive a notice of how to obtain the study guide. The study guide is the official study guide prepared by the Company who provides our written test.
